Lawrence Rice, MD, graduated from the University of Florida, and from Emory University School of Medicine in 1974. Since then, he has been at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, beginning as an Internal Medicine intern and resident, then through Hematology fellowship, rising through the faculty ranks to be Professor of Medicine and Professor of Thrombosis Research. He has directed the Hematology/Oncology course required of sophomore medical students for 25 years and directed Hematology fellowship training for two decades. He has won numerous outstanding teacher awards and was inducted in the Department of Medicine Outstanding Teacher Hall of Fame in the inaugural class of six. His research interests include thrombocytopenias (particularly heparin-induced thrombocytopenia) and anemias/iron metabolism/erythropoietin.
